Zim records eight confirmed cholera cases

Harare (New Ziana)-At least eight cases of Cholera have been confirmed in Zimbabwe since the outbreak started last month, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said on Thursday.

In a daily update, the Ministry said three of the eight cases were recorded on Wednesday alone.

“Thirty-one new cholera suspected cases and 3 laboratory confirmed cases were reported today. These were reported from Centenary (15), Beitbridge (11), Chegutu (4) and Chivi (1).

“14 of the suspected cases and 1 suspected death brought in dead (BID) were Mozambican nationals from Kadunje Village who sought treatment at Chiwenga Clinic, Centenary district, Mashonaland Central province, bordering Mozambique,” it said.

As of 15 March 2023, 1 case is hospitalized at Chivi District Hospital Cholera Treatment Unit (CTU), Masvingo Province.

“As of today, Zimbabwe has 98 suspected cholera cases, 8 confirmed cases, 97 recoveries and 1 Death,” said the Ministry.

According to the Ministry, Buhera, Chegutu, Chikomba, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Chiredzi, Harare, Gokwe North, Marondera, Mazowe, Shamva, Mutare, Murehwa, Mwenezi, Seke and Wedza were the 17 cholera hotspot districts in the country.

The first cholera case this year was reported on 12 February in Chegutu town, Mashonaland West province.

Since then, cases have been reported in six other provinces of the country with all of them not having any epidemiological link to each other.

As of Wednesday, a cumulative total of 98 suspected cholera cases and 1 death had been reported.

Zimbabwe went on alert for cholera on February 23 following reports of similar outbreaks in neighbouring countries as authorities feared that the disease could spread rapidly since the country was a transit route for the Southern African Development Community.
