Zim records reduced road traffic fatalities during Independence

Harare (New Ziana)- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Wednesday said two people died in two separate road traffic accidents recorded during the Independence holiday compared to 11 who perished during the same period last year.

Zimbabwe celebrated its 41st Independence anniversary on Sunday this week while Monday was also a public holiday.

Holiday periods are synonymous with increased road traffic accidents, but ZRP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said during this year’s Independence holiday, no major road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide.

He said 18 people were injured compared to 20 maimed in road traffic accidents over the same period last year.

According to the statistics, the total number of road traffic accidents recorded over the holiday rose to 52 from 46 recorded last year, while fatal accidents declined from five last year to two this year.

“Police are concerned with the loss of human life on the roads and appeals to all road users to be safety conscious when driving by respecting other road users,” Nyathi said.

“Let us all play our part to make roads safe and not death traps and above all comply with all road rules and regulations.”
