Share

Harare (New Ziana) – A Covid-19 fatality was recorded in Matabeleland South on Sunday, bringing the country’s death toll for the pandemic to 276, the Ministry of Health and Childcare has said.

A total of 128 new Covid-19 cases were also recorded countrywide on Sunday, bringing the country’s cumulative positive tally to 9 950.

However, the Ministry’s figures show the bulk of these – 8 482 – had recovered from the pandemic, leaving just 1 192 battling the illness.

Sunday’s death comes against the background of a surge in infections, which health authorities attribute to laxity by the public in observing prevention guidelines such as wearing masks and social distancing.

On the day, Bulawayo Province recorded the highest number of new infections with 63, Matabeleland South 26 and Midlands Province 14.

The surge in infections has prompted the government lately to reiterate warnings to the public of the continued prevalence of the pandemic, and the dangers it posed.

Enforcement of precautionary measures, by the police and other security agencies, have also been steeped up. This is particularly in view of the re-opening of the country’s borders early next month.
