Zimbabwe remembers heroes

Harare (New Ziana)-Zimbabwe on Monday observed Heroes Day in honor of the men and women who fought in the liberation struggle which brought Independence.

Zimbabwe got independence in 1980.

Leading the national commemorations at the National Heroes Acre, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the best way to appreciate the country’s heroes was through building a modern Zimbabwe.

“The best way to show our appreciation for the supreme sacrifice paid by our heroes and heroines is to build the modern , industrialised, developed and prosperous society envisaged in the country’s vision 2030,” he said.

He said in line with the dictates of a modern Zimbabwe, his administration envisions an energy self sufficient country.

“The completion of the multi-pronged energy related projects are being accelerated,” he said.

The President picked the Beitbridge-Harare highway expansion as one of the country’s infrastructure projects which are well on course.

“This year’s celebrations are coming at a time when the country is realising gains coming from the implementation of the National Development Strategy 1. The economy is expected to grow by 7.8 percent this year, surpassing the 2021 budget expectations,” he said.

To also honour heroes and heroines, Government disbursed ZW$2.2 billion towards devolution, said President Mnangagwa.

“In honor of all heroes and heroines who came from all parts of the country, the second Republic is striving to ensure that noone is left behind through Devolution Agenda. Hence resources amounting to ZW$2.2 billion were disbursed to local authorities and provinces,” he said.

President Mnangagwa said it should be remembered that Zimbabwe’s war of liberation was won through the support and solidarity of friendly nations.

“As we engage and re-engage , let no one think they can impose their perspectives or lecture us. The outside world should therefore embrace who we are ; our rich history and unique national realities. This is how we honour the heroes we celebrate today,” he said.

The President commended the frontline workers for committing to work throughout all phases of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Allow me to thank all our brave frontline workers for their commitment of diligency in the provision of basic services during this period.
“On our part as citizens , there is need to remain vigilant by observing the World Health Organisation public health guidelines and protocols including maintaining social distance , sanitising and wearing masks.

“My government will continue providing vaccine doses for free as we journey towards attaining herd immunity,” said President Mnangagwa.
