Harare (New Ziana) -Zimbabwe plans to send a third consignment of aid to Malawi as part of its assistance to disaster ravaged countries in the region, a cabinet Minister has said.
The country has previously sent two other consignments to assist flood victims in Malawi.
Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo told a post cabinet media briefing that through its humanitarian assistance arm, ZIMAID, Zimbabwe would also send aid to the Democratic Republic of Congo and
Rwanda, which recently suffered a similar fate to Malawi.
“ZIMAID will be sending another consignment which will be accompanied by
senior government officials led by Mr Nathan Nkomo, chief director, Civil Protection Unit (CPU),” he said.
Moyo said items in the consignment include 90 metric tons of cement, 30 housing units (cabins), mealie-meal, clothing bales, bumper shoes bales as well as detergents, sanitary pads and medical supplies.
He said the government was grateful to all those that supported the cause including the transporters that were offering to transport the
goods to Malawi, where floods displaced over 500 000 people and left
about 500 dead after torrential rain lashed the country in March this year.
In the DRC, flooding and landslides killed over 400 people mostly in the South Kivu province where some houses, schools and hospitals collapsed as the raging waters wiped out entire villages along with fields of crops and livestock.
At least 5 500 people are still missing while thousands were left homeless.
In Rwanda 130 people were killed after floods and landslides hit the northern and western provinces of the country.
