Harare, (New Ziana) — Zimbabwean athletes flew the country’s flag high at the Tiger Paw Invitational held Saturday at Clemson University’s Indoor Track and Field Complex in South Carolina, United States of America.
Makanakaishe Charamba won the men’s 200m race in 20.16 seconds, setting a new national record and becoming the eighth-fastest man ever in the indoor 200m, while Tapiwa Makarawu finished second with a personal best of 20.31 seconds, the second-fastest time at the event.
For Makarawu, this was his personal best in a 200m race. In a related sporting event, Zimbabwe national rugby team flanker Tinotenda Mavesere was named the Man of the Match after a stellar individual performance that helped Sharks to a 29-19 win over Bulls in the United Rugby Championship in Pretoria, South Africa on Saturday, February 15.
The flanker was the game’s top tackler and also scored the try which effectively took the game away from the Bulls to give the Sharks the edge en route to victory.
With Siya Kolisi missing from the squad, Mavesere took full advantage to showcase his brilliance at Loftus Versfeld to overturn the fortunes for the Sharks to secure a crucial bonus point in the process. The Sharks have moved into fourth spot on the standings, with Ireland’s Leinstar enjoying top spot in the international league.
