Zim’s Covid-19 cases jump to over 500

Share

Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 cases now stand at 512 after the country recorded 23 new cases on Monday, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

Returnees from South Africa accounted for 21 of the latest cases while
the other two were from local transmission.

“The local cases are contacts of known confirmed cases,” the Health
Ministry said.

With 64 people so far having recovered, the number of active cases
stands at 442, while deaths are at six.

A total of 63 347 tests have been carried out to date since the first
case was recorded at the end of March.

Analysts fear there could be more cases of local transmission which
are yet to be officially recorded due to low levels of testing
especially in communities like border towns.

The bulk of Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 cases have so far been imported from
neighbouring countries, primarily South Africa which is witnessing an
exponential rise in the number of new infections on a daily basis.

While government has put in place measures to try and curb the spread
of the virus, observers fear that communities are slackening when it
comes to observing precautions such as social distancing which are
necessary in containing Covid-19.
