Harare (New Ziana)-The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has so far drilled 622 boreholes countrywide under the Presidential Rural Development Program since it was launched in December last year.
Under the Presidential Rural Development Program, ZINWA will drill and equip 35 000 solar powered boreholes in the country’s eight rural provinces by 2025.
In a statement, ZINWA spokesperson Marjorie Munyonga said the ongoing rains were slowing down the exercise.
“Over 600 villages across the country’s eight rural provinces have benefitted from the ongoing Presidential Rural Development Programme being implemented through the Zimbabwe National Authority (ZINWA) and other government agencies,” said Munyonga.
She said of the 622 boreholes that were drilled, 68 were in Manicaland, 90 in Mashonaland Central, 70 in Mashonaland East, 95 in Mashonaland West and 126 in Masvingo province.
A total of 56 boreholes were drilled in Matabeleland North while Matabeleland South had 59 and the Midlands province had 58 drilled.
“The boreholes being drilled will provide water for the villages’ drinking needs, establishment of nutrition gardens, orchards, water for dip tanks and poultry projects,” said Munyonga.
President Emerson Mnangagwa launched the Presidential Rural Development Programme in December 2021 in Mangwe, Matabeleland South province.
The program is expected to transform rural communities from being largely economic spectators to largely economic actors and participants.
ZINWA is working with other government agencies that include the Agricultural Rural Development Authority (ARDA), the Agricultural and Technical Extension Services (AGRITEX), the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Veterinary Services in implementing the project.
