BULAWAYO – New Ziana veteran journalist Ramington Gift Jarijari was one of the six media trainers who were honoured by the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) for training close to 1000 journalists ahead of the August harmonised elections.

Jarijari was presented with a certificate for being a recognised trainer on Election Reporting and Peace Building Journalism by the ZMC chairperson Professor Ruby Magosvongwe and Executive Secretary Godwin Phiri. Also present was Al-Amin Yusuph, UNESCO Regional Advisor for Communication and Information.

Other trainers who were presented with certificates were Tapfuma Machakaire (Flamzee Productions), Jabulani Mangezi (Diamond FM), Chipo Gudhe (Midlands Observer), Nyarado Makombe (Capital FM) and Toneo Rutsito (Zimbabwe Online Content Creators).

“I am very happy to be recognised for training other journalists so that they would effectively cover the elections without any challenges. Our message to journalists was to report facts as they are and balance their stories by giving equal voices to sources. In a nutshell, we urged journalists to adhere to journalism ethics and to be professional in their work,” said an elated Jarijari.

Prof. Magosvonge said they honoured the trainers in recognition of the work they did as they moved around the country, equipping journalists with requisite skills in election reporting and peace building.

In its efforts to capacitate the media industry to objectively and fairly cover the 2023 elections, the Commission rolled out a nationwide training programme based on the Election Reporting and Peace Building Manual.

“The training programme targeted all practitioners from broadcasting, print and digital media,” she said.
