Harare,  (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has commended the public for unwavering support and cooperation in the ongoing battle against lawlessness on the roads and the proliferation of unregistered public transport vehicles.

The commendation comes as the law enforcement agencies intensify efforts under Operation “No to Mushikashika and Lawlessness on the Roads,” aimed at restoring order and safety on the roads.

The operation, which has gained momentum in recent weeks, targets unregistered commuter omnibuses (commonly known as kombis), particularly on high-traffic routes such as the Chitungwiza-Harare Central Business District corridor.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said some of the illegal operators are resorting to dropping passengers before reaching designated points, such as at the Floyover along Seke Road, to evade detection.

The ZRP has vowed to take decisive action against such practices, which not only violate traffic laws, but also endanger public safety.

“We urge all kombi owners to lead by example. It is imperative that anyone intending to operate as a public service vehicle complies with the country’s road regulations. All kombis must be registered and licensed through the appropriate government channels,” he said.

In a bid to promote road safety, the ZRP has called on passengers to avoid boarding dilapidated or unregistered kombis, especially those with obscured windows or covered with makeshift materials like cardboard boxes and those without registration plates, The public has also been urged to refrain from boarding or waiting for transport at undesignated points, as this disrupts traffic flow and poses safety risks.

Commissioner Nyathi further disclosed that the ZRP is cracking down on corrupt elements within its ranks who have been colluding with unregistered kombi operators.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police Command is taking decisive action on corrupt elements within the rank and file of the police,” he said, adding that such individuals are undermining efforts to restore order on the roads.

He added that to ensure the smooth implementation of the operation, Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba has directed police commanders to facilitate the passage of duly registered and compliant kombis at checkpoints without unnecessary delays.

The move is aimed at encouraging operators to regularize their vehicles while maintaining efficiency in public transport services.
