IN an eff ort to end long distance walks to school in Hwange rural community, World Vision Hwange has built a low cost girls dormitory at Nechishala Secondary School that will enable them attend classes all year round.The construction of the dormitory sees a long struggle for the girl child who prior to using classrooms had used bush accommodation in order to attend lessons. The school which is 30 km east from Hwange town previously had boarding learners sleeping in classrooms due to the unavailability of a girls’ dormitory.The low cost boarding dormitory will house girls from as far as Jambezi, Kasibo and Mwemba just to mention a few.Leocadra Gokwe (17) is among the learners at Nechishala Secondary who said the establishment of the dormitory came at the perfect time when they needed security.“Staying in the classroom was scary as there was no security. Th e classroom had a broken door and no burglar bars and 30 of us would sleep on the floor. We also did not have lighting in the classrooms,” said Gokwe.

In Kasibo there are no secondary schools and that is why I had to move to Nechishala as a border,” said Ndlovu.sioning of the Nechishala girl’s boarding facility, the Hwange District School’s Inspector Walter Moyo appreciated the gesture by World Vision in supporting the girl child in education by constructing the dormitory.“At Nechishala, a gir’ls dormitory was constructed to help girls who used classrooms for their accommodation when at school. “Beds and bed linen were provided for each girl making their stay at school more comfortable and more human. Now they are living comfortably and can carry a more conducive and safe environment as their security has been improved,” said Moyo.

On its part, Hwange Rural District Council has been working with World Vision to create a supportive environment as well as improving the lives of the most vulnerable children in the district.Engineer Alick Mudenda who spoke on behalf of the HRDC CEO Phindile Ncube, said World Vision had helped the community of Hwange district.“Together we boast today of over 34 irrigation schemes that are serving 1 000 households strengthened livelihoods and resilience. These children will not sleep without a meal because of these gardens.”

“The integrated approach of improving access to education is reaching over 3 000 children of Hwange through improved learning infrastructure and empowering children through training to help foster a better life and behaviour. We are proud of the St Mary echo school with ICT solutions for education,” he said.Hwange Distict Development Coordinator representative, Simbabrashe Kayela, echoed similar sentiments saying they value close partnership and collaboration with World Vision which is complimenting government eff orts in providing education, health, nutrition and protecting children. “When drought strikes the area, which is a common occurrence, World Vision has been one of the trusted partners in the emergency response to save lives through assistance,” said Kayela Meanwhile, Shepherd Dhlamini the Southern Region Manager World Vision Operation Manager appreciated the eff orts made by Hwange Rural District Council in their joint structure for the communities.

“The special relationship, where the RDC contributes substantially in developing the rural community of Hwange is greatly appreciated in Hwange,” said.
