Harare, (New Ziana) – National Foods Private Limited has invested US$8.6 million in a state-of-the-art Buhler wheat mill in Bulawayo, significantly boosting the country’s milling capacity and advancing Zimbabwe’s food security and economic resilience.
In a statement posted on the National Development Strategy (NDS1) X handle, the Government said the new facility, which has a production capacity of 300 metric tonnes of wheat per day, is equipped with modern, energy-efficient technology that enhances operational efficiency while meeting top-tier hygiene and quality standards.
“National Foods Private Limited has invested USD 8.6 million in a state-of-the-art Buhler wheat mill in Bulawayo, boosting production capacity to 300 metric tonnes per day.
“This investment enhances food security, promotes national self-sufficiency, and reduces flour imports, saving foreign currency,” said the Government.
The development marks a major milestone in the company’s expansion strategy and supports the government’s drive towards national self-sufficiency and import substitution.
With the increased capacity, the mill is expected to substantially reduce flour imports, saving valuable foreign currency and ensuring a more stable local supply of high-quality flour to bakeries and food processors across the country.
Speaking on the investment, company officials said the Bulawayo mill is designed to “strengthen local production systems and improve affordability for consumers while supporting Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector.”
In line with that commitment, National Foods has contracted 80,000 metric tonnes of wheat from farmers in the southern region for the 2025 winter crop, demonstrating its continued partnership with local producers.
This initiative is expected to stimulate rural economic growth, create jobs across the value chain, and empower smallholder farmers through guaranteed markets and improved incomes.
The project also positions Bulawayo as a key agro-industrial hub, contributing to regional development and reinforcing Zimbabwe’s progress towards sustainable food security and industrial transformation.
