Harare, (New Ziana) – A new US$70 million cement plant in Chegutu is taking shape, with production scheduled to begin early next year in what is expected to be a major boost to Zimbabwe’s industrial growth and infrastructure development, the government has said.
In a post on National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) X handle, the Government said the plant, developed by Chinese investor Shuntai Investment Pvt Ltd, is set to produce at least 800,000 tonnes of cement annually, a capacity that could help Zimbabwe move closer to self-sufficiency in cement production.
During the construction phase, the project has already created about 200 jobs, with more employment opportunities expected once operations commence. “The plant is expected to positively impact the local community, not only through job creation but also by providing a stable source of cement for infrastructure development. This could lead to improved roads, housing, and other essential facilities,” it said.
Beyond direct job creation, the project is also equipping locals with critical technical skills. Workers such as Rutendo Chafesuka, now trained to operate heavy machinery, are gaining hands-on experience that will benefit both the community and the wider economy in the long term.
The plant’s operations are expected to have a ripple effect across Chegutu and beyond, ensuring a steady supply of cement for roads, housing projects, and other key infrastructure. This could accelerate development in both urban and rural areas, improving living standards and driving economic growth.
The Government has welcomed the development, noting that such investments are a result of deliberate efforts to create a business-friendly environment in Zimbabwe. Supportive policies have been credited with attracting foreign direct investment into the manufacturing sector, seen as key to reviving the economy.
The Chegutu cement plant stands out not only as a major industrial investment but also as a symbol of economic renewal. With the promise of jobs, skills transfer, and improved infrastructure, it is poised to bring lasting benefits to the local community and the country at large.
