Harare, (New Ziana) – A 51-year-old Early Childhood Development (ECD) teacher from Bikita has been dragged before the Masvingo Regional Court facing two counts of assault in a chilling case that has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the alleged incidents occurred between 20 May and 5 June 2025 at a primary school in the Chief Budzi area of Bikita District. The accused is alleged to have sucked blood from the fingers of two young pupils under her care, acts reportedly committed without the knowledge or consent of either the school administration or the children’s parents.
The disturbing events came to light when a vigilant parent noticed unexplained wounds on their child’s fingers while bathing them.
Upon questioning, the child revealed the ordeal, prompting the parent to approach the school.
As the issue was raised, similar reports surfaced involving another pupil, prompting immediate legal action.
The motive behind the teacher’s actions remains unclear, and investigations are currently underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the bizarre and deeply troubling allegations. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, and psychological evaluations are expected to form part of the probe.
The accused has been remanded in custody until 30 June 2025, pending the completion of investigations.
This case has sparked outrage and concern over the safety of children in educational institutions, particularly in early learning centres where trust and care are paramount. It serves as a sobering reminder of the need for continuous vigilance, robust child protection policies, and immediate response mechanisms within schools and communities to safeguard the welfare of minors.
