Zimbabwe has taken a major step toward strengthening energy security after Cabinet on Tuesday approved a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project between the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and Jindal (Private) Limited for the rehabilitation and operation of Hwange Power Station Units 1 to 6 and auxiliaries.
Announcing the decision at a post-Cabinet media briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere said the project will run under a Rehabilitate, Operate and Transfer (ROT) model, designed to breathe new life into the aging thermal power station.
Dr. Muswere said reviving the first six units at Hwange will significantly boost the country’s power supply, which has been constrained in recent years.
“The project will benefit Zimbabwe by increasing national electricity generation, reducing load shedding, and ensuring reliable power for both industries and households,” he said.
The minister highlighted that reliable electricity supply is key to sustaining industrial production, boosting output, and creating new jobs.
Consistent power will also support household needs, enhance economic activity, and improve the quality of life for citizens.
“Reliable power will enable sustained production, boost industrial output, enhance economic activity and create jobs,” Dr. Muswere emphasized.
He further revealed that negotiation refinements are still ongoing to ensure that the final partnership arrangement fully serves the national interest.
The PPP model will see Jindal (Private) Limited working with ZPC to modernize and run the plant, before eventually transferring it back to the Government.
The rehabilitation of Hwange’s Units 1 to 6 is expected to mark a turning point in Zimbabwe’s efforts to achieve energy security, drive economic growth, and reduce dependence on imports.
