KWEKWE – Camelot Schools student Lucky Dube raised the country’s flag high when he scooped
three medals at the African Union of Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Karate Championship held in
Harare recently.
Dube, who is coached by Sensei Ziwira who is the instructor of Shotokani Jodo, scooped two Bronze
medals in Kumite and a Silver medal in Karter.
In a speech at a hero’s welcome function, City of Kwekwe Town Clerk Dr. Lucia Mkandhla hailed
Camelot Schools for playing a pivotal role in moulding podium performance athletes in Kwekwe and
Zimbabwe at large.
“As civic leaders in Kwekwe we are fully in support of such great initiatives by providing platforms for
youths to showcase their talents by providing sports facilities and organising major sports and
cultural events such as the popular Kwekwe Youth Festival.
“I must say Karate is a sport that requires high physical demand profile, courage and toughness but
Lucky managed to endure the pain, competition stress and did his best to represent the country of
Zimbabwe,” she said.
Dr. Mkandhla challenged the corporate world, school administrators and sports personalities to play
their part in the development of sport as it has become a huge employer in the world.
The Town Clerk added that sport can also be used as a vehicle to advocate for peace and minimising
drug abuse among youths in the community.
Dube’s achievement comes after Leeroy Mpala of Kwekwe, who represented the country in Mexico
World Chess Championships in 2019. He is currently in Cyprus on a chess scholarship.
