Harare (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe government has commenced preparations for the 2022 population census to be conducted at a cost of $85 million, a Cabinet Minister said on Monday.

Zimbabwe conducts population counts every ten years with the last one conducted in 2012 showing that the country had 13 million people.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube said groundwork for the census had already started.

“We are going to be training something like 33-36 000 enumerators; it is a major undertaking which requires a lot of manpower,” he said.

“The idea is that in August 2021 we have a trial run to make sure that the system will work and then finally on the midnight of 17th August 2022 the census officially starts.”

Ncube said this time around enumerators will be collecting data using Information Technology gadgets.

“This will enable faster data collection but also more efficient analysis, we should be able to produce figures and numbers within six months unlike in the past which used to take two years so by March 2023 the figures will be ready and published,” he said.
