Nkayi, Zimbabwe – A baptism ceremony turned tragic in Fanyana Village, Nkayi, after a member of the Twelve Apostolic sect drowned during the church service at Tohwe Dam, leav-ing the local community in shock.

The deceased, Innocent Moyo (35), was performing baptism rites for congregants when the incident occurred. According to Matabeleland North Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Glory Banda, Moyo had successfully baptised five church members before calling Pindani Sibanda for his turn.

While baptising Sibanda, Moyo reportedly lost his footing and sank into the deeper part of the dam. Unable to swim to safety, he drowned as horrified congregants looked on.
A report was made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Nkayi, and Moyo’s body was later retrieved by church members and villagers. Police confirmed that no visible injuries were found on the body.

“The body was retrieved, but no visible injuries were noted,” said Assistant Inspector Banda.

The incident has left the Fanyana Village community in mourning, with many expressing shock and sadness over the untimely loss during what was meant to be a sacred ceremony.

“This is a tragic event, and our thoughts are with the family and the congregation during this difficult time. It is essential for communities to prioritise safety during such ceremonies, and we urge them to seek safer locations for future baptisms,” said Banda .
