CHIREDZI Town Council with five members of the CCC and a similar number for
Zanu PF tossed a coin to find a chairman after voting ended at five apiece.
Eventually, CCC's Roger Chikonye representing Ward 7 won the toss used
throughout the Committee elections after several attempts ended in deadlock.
Ward 3 Councillor Jameson Charumbira of Zanu PF had a toss and won the deputy
Chairmanship of the Chiredzi Town Council from his rival Philimon Muchaendepi
(CCC).
Ushe Vimbai of Zanu PF will chair the Finance Committee.
Zanu PF’s Liberty Macharaga, one of the longest-serving and loyal councillors whom
the sugar-growing community had earmarked to vie for the Chairmanship’s post of
Ward 1 had to rough it out with Ward 2’s Danford Chikanyau of CCC for the Health
and Housing Committee Chair.
The Technical Services Committee will be chaired by Gift Chigidi of CCC while Sekai
Njanjure of Zanu PF will chair the Audit Committee.
In his speech, the new chairman Cllr Chikonye said as councillors they should
respect the citizens' trust bestowed on them as community leaders.
"As Councillors, we are bound by the Laws of the Government of Zimbabwe to
respect the citizens who voted us into power, hence the need to practise political
maturity and tolerance as we build the Chiredzi we want, following the Urban
Councils Act under the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
"My door as the Town Council Chairman will always be open for dialogue with
residents, associations and stakeholders," said Chikonye.
He said political maturity is key to the substantial development and growth of the
town.
Chikonye, now in his second term of office, pledged to work with everyone.
Meanwhile, in Chiredzi Rural District Council, the Councillors elected Ward 32 Cllr
Aspect Mashingaidze of Zanu PF for the Chairmanship post after batting it out with
Leonard Makondo. Cllr Memory Maruta was elected the Vice- Chairperson.
