CHIVI Rural District Council has set a target of drilling at least 30 boreholes, rehabilitate around 100 and solarise four water piped schemes in its quest to ensure clean and safe water in the district.

The RDC seeks to ensure its communities have water piped schemes. Chivi District is in Region 5 and therefore experiences water challenges. The water schemes come as relief to both the people and livestock.

Chivi RDC Chief Executive Officer, Tariro Matavire, said under devolution they had quite a number of projects they wish to implement which include water and sanitation.

“We want to construct four piped water schemes, where we want to solarise the boreholes which have high yields and do a piped water reticulation system in various villages. We are going to provide the pipes, the tanks and the solar system so that our communities have piped water schemes,” he said.

“We also budgeted for drilling of boreholes; we want to do at least 30 boreholes during this financial year. Under the same programme of water and sanitation, we want to do a very serious borehole rehabilitation exercise where we are targeting about 100 boreholes.”

Matavire said they were going to use part of the Devolution Funds and from council’s local revenue account.

In 2020, President Emmerson Mnangagwa commissioned the Chombwe piped water scheme in the district which was resuscitated through the use of Devolution Funds for the benefit of people from Chivi North and Chivi Central constituencies.

The scheme, which was initiated by Headman Madyangove with the assistance the District Development Fund in 1972. It collapsed due to financial problems with the community unable to repair the pumps. It was resuscitated to benefit over 100 000 people.

Meanwhile, under the health section the local authority is working on the construction of two clinics, which are at 80 percent completion.

Matavire said what was only left for the clinics was equipment, furniture, solar and water reticulation.

“Our aim was to open these clinics before June 30. We are still hopeful the Government will release the money so that we are able to purchase the equipment, the furniture and open the clinics before June 30,” he said.
