FOUR intoxicated men allegedly murdered a mentally ill patient for unknown reason,
in an incident that has shocked many villagers in Mwenezi.
What started as a drinking binge at one of the business centres in Mwenezi for
Honest Gumbo (24), Tafadzwa Miyo (19), Clever Shumba (21) and Tapiwa Moyo
(19), ended tragically when the quartet ended up becoming violent and killing a
mentally ill patient, who was going about his business.
Masvingo police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, confirmed the
incident and said the four men have since been arrested with the body of the 43-
year-old patient, William Chikwaza, awaiting post mortem at Neshuro Hospital.
"On September 2, the four men were drinking beer at Makugwe Business Centre
where they later became violent. They entered Madhau Shop where they met
Chikwaza, who was holding an axe.
“The quartet forced him to go out of the shop and started beating him up. Chikwaza
screamed out for help but no one assisted as people were afraid of approaching the
    violent drinkers.
One of the drinkers, Shumba, threatened Sekai Chikwazi, an assistant at Madhau
Shop assistance to stop looking at them," he said.
After severely beating up Chikwaza, the four men tried to escape from the scene but
Gumbo was apprehended 5km away from the scene by people who were at a
memorial service, while the other three were caught by members of the public and
were taken to Mwenezi police station.
