    Drunken rage earns man 18 months jail

    Gweru (Masvingo Star-New Ziana) – A man from Nyika Growth Point in Masvingo who attacked an elderly woman coming from church in an unprovoked rage of drunkenness is to cool his temper in prison for the next 18 months.

    Julius Dhiyo, (28), pleaded guilty and was convicted by Masvingo regional magistrate, Dambudzo Malunga who sentenced him to two years imprisonment, with six months suspended for five years.

    It was the State case that on October 5, this year at Duma location near AFM church, Nyika, Bikita, Dhiyo attempted to cause the death of Raviro Matariro by striking her once with a machete on the ear and hand.

    Matariro, (62), of 808, Nyika, Bikita, is not related to Dhiyo.

    On that day around 10pm, Matariro was on her way home from church when she heard Dhiyo shouting and running towards her. She then tried to evade him, but Dhiyo caught up with the her.

    On reaching Matariro, Dhiyo struck her on the right ear and hand and she fell onto the ground. Jetro Chuma, who was near the scene, rushed and restrained Dhiyo from further assaulting Matariro.

    Chuma and other people that rushed to the scene then apprehended Dhiyo and took him to the police.

    Explaining his actions in court, Dhiyo said he was drunk when he attacked Matariro.
