Harare, (New Ziana)- A Harare man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating an official from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) in an attempt to influence police proceedings.
In a statement ZACC said the suspect, Tinotenda Maunganidze, was taken into custody after he reportedly claimed to be a ZACC official while instructing a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer to release a motorist who had been arrested for traffic violations along Ardbennie Road in Harare.
It Maunganidze allegedly approached a ZRP officer identified as Wilbert Ngandu and demanded the release of Tatenda Chidziva, who had been apprehended on allegations of breaching road traffic laws.
The police officer refused to take the directive, leading Maunganidze to escalate the matter by going to Mbare Police Station.
At the station, Ngandu requested official ZACC identification from Maunganidze, but instead, Maunganidze produced an ID card from the Zimbabwe National Anti-Corruption Organization (ZINACO), an entity that is not affiliated with ZACC.
Sensing something amiss, the police officer promptly notified ZACC, which led to Maunganidze’s arrest.
ZACC has reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of anti-corruption efforts and has warned the public against impersonating its officers.
