Former Nigerian president Obasanjo in Zim

Harare(New Ziana)-Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is in the country on an official visit, on Thursday met President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House to discuss investment opportunities in Zimbabwe.

Obasanjo, who is in the country in his capacity as chairperson of the South Africa based think-tank Brenthurst Foundation, was accompanied in the meeting by Gregory Mills and Nicholas Frank Openheimer who are executive members of the foundation.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Obasanjo said the delegation was interested in investing in Zimbabwe.

“I have along with me some people who have interest in investing here in Zimbabwe and that’s also part of what we are here for. We cannot talk of development of a country without investment; domestic, foreign and regional investment,” he said.

Obasanjo said political stability remained a crucial attraction to investors.

“Political stability, security and predictability are preconditions for a healthy economic development and investment both foreign and domestic. We cannot be talking of development and progress without talking about all the things that must go with it like political stability, security, predictability and all the aspects of fundamental basic things that make preconditions for investment,” he said.

Obasanjo said his meeting with President Mnangagwa also discussed on the need to ensure beneficial economic cooperation between Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

“It’s about Africa and about Zimbabwe, and about Nigeria and about Africans; Zimbabweans and Nigerians,” he said.

“What should be the development between our two countries and what should be development and programme of enhancement of the living standards of our people. Our people in Zimbabwe, our people in Nigeria and indeed our people in the whole of Africa,” he said.
