Harare, (New Ziana) – The City of Harare has urged residents to get vaccinated against cholera as the risk of infection increases with the onset of the rain season.
According to city health officials, cholera vaccines are now available free of charge at municipal polyclinics and satellite clinics.
The vaccination campaign is being prioritised in identified hotspots, including Glen View Polyclinic, Budiriro Polyclinic, Kambuzuma (Kuwadzana) Polyclinic, Rutsanana Polyclinic, Glen Norah Satellite Clinic, Mbare, and Mufakose, among others.
The local authority emphasized that prevention remains the most effective measure against cholera and encouraged residents to take advantage of the free vaccination service.
The city further reassured the public that it is prepared to respond to any suspected cases.
The local authority urged residents experiencing symptoms associated with cholera, particularly diarrhoea with or without vomiting, to seek immediate medical attention at clinics across Harare to ensure early treatment and reduce the risk of severe illness.
Zimbabwe has faced recurring cholera outbreaks, notably in 2018-2019 and again in late 2023/early 2024, driven by failing water/sanitation infrastructure, contaminated water sources (wells, boreholes), and high population density, leading to severe dehydration and deaths.
