Kamativi Mine Dam crocs kill nine in four months

Share

Hwange (New Ziana) -Residents of the defunct Kamativi Tin Mine in Matabeleland North province are appealing for assistance to deal with crocodiles at the local dam which have killed nine fishermen and left scores of others without limbs over the past four months.

The Kamativi Dam, which residents call “DRC”, is a source of livelihood as it has provided for a thriving fishing business which has been the prime source of income for many families since the Tin Mine closed in 1994.

But not all fishing expeditions have ended well since the last December bountiful rains as the number of crocodiles in the dam has increased and many fishermen, some coming from as far as Victoria Falls and Bulawayo, have been mauled by the reptiles.

Ward 11 councilor Jacob Nyoni said some white former mine managers brought the reptiles into the dam as they wanted to prevent illegal fishing.

The dam was constructed to provide water for mine operations and for workers consumption.
