Kwekwe (New Ziana) – A 25-year-old Kwekwe man was assaulted and later died from injuries sustained in the attack after being mistaken for a thief when he visited his girlfriend in Kwekwe’s Mbizo suburb, police have said.

Sylvester Ncube was assaulted his girlfriend’s neighbours on July 2 after they mistook him for a thief on the prowl.

Midlands police spokesperson, Emmanuel Mahoko said the suspected assailants had since been arrested.

“He (Ncube) knocked on her (girlfriend) door but there was no response. He went to a neighbouring house and again knocked. It is alleged, the occupant of the house, Philip Luthuli (22) got out and teamed up with one Shepherd Mafukidze. The two assaulted Ncube with a sjambok and another unknown object all over the body after suspecting him to be a thief,” he said.

Ncube died in hospital later from the injuries.
