Masvingo, (New Ziana) – Masvingo vendors’ markets re-opened on Thursday, much to the delight of the traders, after lengthy Covid-19 related closure.
Municipal authorities took advantage of the closure to refurbish the facilities, which are a source of livelihood for hundreds, if not thousands, of people in the city.
On Thursday, the refurbished market stalls at the corner of Robert Mugabe Street and Leopold Takawira Avenue were a hive of activity following the re-opening.
The markets had been closed since March when the government declared the first national Covid-19 lockdown. The re-opening follows another government directive relaxing the lockdown restrictions.
The markets will now open for six days with mandatory closure on the seventh to allow for Covid-19 disinfection.
But the markets will now accommodate fewer traders, leaving most of the 5 000 applicants who wanted stalls with no formalised trading place.
