Harare, (New Ziana) – The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has warned the public and the healthcare sector over the circulation of falsified Cloxacillin 250mg capsules, which pose a serious threat across the country.

In a press statement on Friday, MCAZ confirmed that the counterfeit antibiotics have been found in the local market and are being distributed through unauthorized channels, with Gartas Investments named as one of the sources of the falsified drugs.

“These products are not only illegal but also potentially life-threatening. Their use could lead to ineffective treatment, harmful side effects, and the acceleration of antimicrobial resistance (AMR),” it said.

Cloxacillin is a critical antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, and MCAZ said the presence of ineffective or harmful versions can have devastating consequences, especially in vulnerable communities.

According to MCAZ, the counterfeit Cloxacillin capsules are visually distinct from the genuine product manufactured by Varichem Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd, one of the country’s licensed pharmaceutical producers.

MCAZ called on all pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and wholesalers, both public and private, to immediately quarantine any suspect Cloxacillin 250mg capsules and submit them to the Authority by August 1, 2025 for safe disposal.

“The Authority urges all stakeholders to act swiftly and responsibly. The presence of these falsified medicines compromises the integrity of our health system and the well-being of our citizens,” it said, adding it is working with law enforcement agencies and supply chain partners to trace and remove the counterfeit products from circulation.
