MUTARE-The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has announced plans to urgently upgrade the deteriorating spillway at Mutunha Dam in Buhera, warning that the current structure can no longer safely contain water pressure, posing serious flood risks downstream. The dam, located in Ward 15, serves as the primary water source for the 22- hectare Mutunha Irrigation Scheme.
ZINWA’s Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing, Marjorie Munyonga, confirmed that an assessment has been completed, revealing the critical need for spillway rehabilitation.
“ZINWA has conducted a thorough evaluation of the Mutunha Dam spillway and prepared a detailed Bill of Quantities outlining required materials. We are now mobilizing resources to commence repairs as soon as possible,” Munyonga said.
Local stakeholders have raised alarm over the dam’s precarious condition. Joab Mutunha, Chairperson of the Mutunha Irrigation Scheme, described the situation as a disaster waiting to happen.
“Our spillway is dangerously outdated and cannot withstand water pressure. We need immediate intervention before the rainy season begins to avert catastrophe,” he warned.
The community’s concerns are amplified by recent losses. Last year, scheme members suffered significant crop damage including eight hectares of maize, three hectares of horticulture produce, and half a hectare of watermelons and cucumbers when the compromised spillway began sucking in mud.
Buhera Ward 15 Councillor Wisdom Jiri echoed the urgency: “Our entire community faces genuine risk. Timely action from authorities is crucial to prevent potentially devastating consequences.”
The planned upgrade comes as ZINWA works to address aging water infrastructure across the country, with the Mutunha Dam project prioritised to protect both agricultural production and downstream communities from flood threats.
