    Mugabe dies

    Harare,(New Ziana) – Former President Robert Mugabe has died, the government announced on Friday.

    He was 95.

    President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced his predecessor’s death in a tweet, describing him as a black liberation and empowerment icon both at home in Zimbabwe and Africa as a whole.

    “It is with utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President Cde Robert Mugabe. Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people,” he said.

    “His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” said President Mnangagwa.

    Former President Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe from 1980, when the country gained independence from Britain, to 2017 when he stepped down.

    He had been frequently in and out of hospital in Singapore in recent years, as his health deteriorated, partly due to his advanced age.
