Harare, (New Ziana) — The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) has declared June 7 this year as the date when the country’s top athletes will battle for glory, and and a place on Team Zimbabwe.
The 2025 Interprovincial Athletics Championships, to be held at the iconic White City Stadium in Bulawayo, will serve as the official pre-qualifier for the upcoming Southern Region Senior Championships.
NAAZ is using the Interprovincial meet not just as a competition, but as a proving ground for the country’s finest talent. “This is more than a national meet. It is a launchpad to continental glory. Athletes must understand that there will be no automatic selections or late trials, White City is the stage where national dreams are made,” said NAAZ president Tendai Tagara.
The Championships will determine the final roster for the national senior squad set to represent the country in Harare in July, when the nation hosts the Confederation of African Athletics Southern Region Senior Championships in Harare in July this year.
It will also be used to select athletes for the African Union Sport Council Region 5 Games in Namibia the same month and the 2028 Olympic Games to e held in Los Angeles, the United States of America.
Tagara emphasized that the selection process will be rigorous and uncompromising, saying “only those who compete at the Interprovincial Championships will be considered. There will be no shortcuts, no exceptions. This event is where we separate potential from performance.”
NAAZ has issued a nationwide advisory urging all interested athletes to contact their provincial athletics representatives while only those registered through official provincial channels will be eligible for participation.
“The process is not just about fairness, it’s about professionalism. If we are serious about building elite athletes, we must first demand elite discipline,” he said.
The 2025 Interprovincial Championships are also part of Zimbabwe’s ambitious 5-Year Strategic Plan (2024–2028), designed to foster high-performance development, strengthen regional partnerships, and bolster its presence on the global athletics stage.
