Nkomo withdraws from by-election race

Tsholotsho (New Ziana) – The son of late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, Jabulani, has withdrawn from next Thursday’s Zanu PF primary elections to choose the party’s candidate for the March 26 by-elections in Tsholotsho South constituency.
By-elections are due in over 28 Parliamentary constituencies and 105 council wards, mostly necessitated by recalls by the Douglas Mwonzora led opposition MDC-T, with a few occasioned by re-deployments and deaths.
Nkomo who had sent his CV for vetting to the Zanu PF Tsholotsho district administration office, in line with party procedures, asked to withdraw, and has since thrown his weight behind Musa Ncube, the only female candidate in the race.
Resultantly, six candidates remain in the race to secure the Zanu PF ticket.
The other candidates include Ronald Tshuma, Owen Sibanda, a former councillor, Kembo Tshuma, Patrick Ngwenya and Wiseman Ndlovu.
The Tsholotsho South constituency fell vacant following the death of former MP Zenzo Sibanda from Covid 19 last year.
The ruling party has already laid out a road-map of activities to be implemented before the January 26 nomination date and after.
All party members interested in contesting for either the vacant National Assembly or Local Authority seats, were invited to submit their CVs to their respective Provinces from January 12 up to January 14.
The Provincial Chairpersons will then be required to submit the CVs to the Commissariat Department at Party Headquarters on January 15.
Approved candidates will be announced on January 18.
“It is only the approved candidates who shall contest in the party primary elections on Thursday 20 January 2022,” the party said in a statement early this week.
“The Commissariat Department will convene a major preparatory meeting for the primary elections on Friday 14 January 2022 at 1000 hours.”
The meeting will be attended by Provincial leadership from the main wing, women, youth wings and provincial political commissars.
“Zanu PF takes these up-coming by-elections seriously and is planning for nothing less than total victory in both the National Assembly and Local Authority elections.”
