Harare, (New Ziana) – The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) plans to resume the passenger train service on the Harare to Mutare route, staring during the week beginning 13 October this year, at an affordable fare of $5 per trip.
The development follows the overwhelming public response to the Sanganayi/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi luxury train, which operated during the recently held tourism expo, which included sleeper and dining coaches.
Initially, the fare for the luxury service was set at $60, but after a public outcry, it was reduced to $20 one way, sparking renewed enthusiasm for rail travel in the country.
In a statement, the NRZ expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, particularly the people of Mutare and attendees of the Travel expo, for their support.
“The enthusiastic response made the event a huge success and confirmed strong public interest in rail train. Inspired by this, we are actively pursuing plans to offer train services more regularly across the country,” it said, adding the launch of the Harare–Mutare service marks a key step in its broader strategy to revitalize rail services.
While the Expo train featured premium offerings, the NRZ plans to introduce standard and economy class coaches for upcoming routes to make rail travel more accessible to everyday passengers.
The NRZ also confirmed that preparations are underway to resume the tourist and passenger train between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.
“In the meantime we are working on logistics to resume the regular tourist and passenger train between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls as part of our commitment to provide reliable and accessible rail travel for Zimbabweans. We will continue to keep the public informed as we roll out these plans,” it said.
The NRZ suspended passenger services in 2020 due to financial challenges and deteriorating infrastructure.
