Harare,  (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has cleared the air over claims on social media that renowned green entrepreneur Vongai Nadia Mabvirakure had been abducted by some unknown individuals.

In a statement, the police dismissed the claims as misleading, adding that the individual in question was, in fact, a suspect in an ongoing fraud investigation.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that Mabvirakure is currently under police guard in a hospital, where she is receiving medical attention while investigations into her alleged involvement in a case of “Theft of Trust Property” continue.

Mabvirakure is being charged under Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, following a complaint filed by Tichabaiwa Gwadu, a representative of the Matiza Foundation, who accused her of misappropriating funds intended for a community project.

According to Commissioner Nyathi, in September 2024, Mabvirakure’s company, Green Rebirth Trust, entered into a partnership with the Matiza Foundation to construct a greenhouse or shed net at Chomupunga Business Centre in Murewa.

Mabvirakure was entrusted with USD15 200 in cash to purchase the necessary materials based on her quotation.

However, instead of fulfilling her obligations, she allegedly diverted the funds for personal use and proceeded to acquire the building materials on credit from Brickforce Hardware in Murewa under the false pretence that the Matiza Foundation would cover the costs.

The discrepancy was uncovered when Brickforce Hardware management contacted the Matiza Foundation demanding payment, prompting the foundation to file a report with the ZRP Murewa station.

On March 5, 2025, a team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Murewa visited Mabvirakure’s known address in Chitungwiza to locate her but her son, Patrick Mabvirakure, informed them that his mother was not at home.

This led to an intensive search, culminating in her being found and placed under police guard in a hospital. While the exact circumstances of her hospitalization remain unclear, Commissioner Nyathi emphasized that her medical condition is being addressed and the investigation is proceeding while she is under police guard.
