Harare, (New Ziana)— The Public Service Commission (PSC) has warned civil servants against heeding calls circulating on various social media platforms to stay away from work on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

In a statement on Monday, the PSC described the calls as “reckless and disruptive incitements,” and expressed concern over the attempts to derail service delivery and undermine national development efforts.

It expressed confidence that committed and disciplined civil servants who are fully aware of their responsibilities would not be swayed by such actions. The PSC reminded public servants that their core mandate is to serve the people of Zimbabwe “faithfully, diligently, and without interruption.”

It emphasized the importance of maintaining the continuity of essential public services and highlighted the central role of public servants in advancing the country’s national development agenda of attaining an upper middle income status by 2030.

“Participation in any stay-away that disrupts service delivery constitutes a dereliction of duty and an act of insubordination. Such actions are unpatriotic, undermine national unity, damage the economy, and hinder the collective progress of the nation,” it said.

The PSC reiterated that 22 and 23 April are ordinary working days and as such, all civil servants, except those on duly authorised leave, are expected to report to their workstations, observe normal working hours, and where necessary, work beyond official hours to meet service delivery requirements.

“To ensure compliance, Accounting Officers across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, including devolved structures, have been directed to maintain accurate attendance registers. PSC Inspectors will collect these registers daily to enforce the relevant Public Service regulations without delay,” it said.

The Commission reiterated its expectation that all Public Servants will continue to discharge their duties with “characteristic commitment, professionalism, and loyalty to the Republic of Zimbabwe.” “Together, let us uphold the dignity of the Public Service and contribute meaningfully towards building a prosperous, resilient, and united Zimbabwe,” it said.
