Gweru (New Ziana) –Castle Lager Premier Soccer League debutants Sheasham FC will this year aim to survive the dreaded chop as other teams from Gweru have failed to survive beyond one season in the topflight of Zimbabwean football.

Teams from Gweru have in recent years failed to survive relegation with Telone, Whawha, Hardbody and Nichrut spending only one season in the PSL.

Air Force of Zimbabwe side Chapungu is the only Gweru team that has survived for more than two seasons in the topflight league.

Speaking to journalists after their 1-0 loss to Ngezi Platinum in a pre-season friendly, Sheasham coach John Nyikadzino said they would not be over-ambitious.

“We are a newly promoted side and we do not have to be over-ambitious. We are new in the league, and we have a lot to learn. Our target is to consolidate our position in the PSL,” he said.

Nyikadzino said he was pleased with the progression of his team despite failing to record a single victory in the pre-season friendlies.

He said he was also pleased with the way they played against Ngezi, a side from whom he said they had learnt a lot.

“We learnt a lot especially their transition from defence to attack, attack to defence, it was a good lesson for us,” he said.

Nyikadzino said his team needed to work on fitness as Ngezi’s intensity had exposed them.

He said it was deliberate choosing a team like Ngezi, as it was one of the best in the league.

Sheasham has so far played Giants Dynamos and Highlanders, as well as army side Black Rhinos.
