Speaker Mudenda in Japan to boost parliamentary ties

Tokyo, (New Ziana) – Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda is in Japan on an official visit during which he is expected to hold high-level meetings aimed at strengthening parliamentary and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Mudenda’s visit takes place against the backdrop of the recent 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) and Expo 2025 in Osaka attended by President Emmerson Mnangagwa where the two countries re-affirmed plans to deepen relations.

In a meeting with the Japan-African Union Parliamentary Friendship Association, chaired by Honorable Yamagiwa Daishiro, Mudenda promoted deeper bilateral ties and encouraged Japanese investment in Zimbabwe’s mineral sector, particularly lithium.

He stressed the importance of local value addition through battery manufacturing.

Other areas of focus included tourism, agriculture, and the digitalization of parliamentary processes using artificial intelligence.

Mudenda also proposed establishing a Zimbabwe-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association and signing a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize inter-parliamentary collaboration.

Yamagiwa commended Zimbabwe’s resource potential and reaffirmed Japan’s support for sesame seed production through Japan International Coc-operation Agency.

Later, Mudenda met with Sekiguchi, President of Japan’s House of Councillors. Both leaders emphasized the role of parliamentary diplomacy and legislative alignment in promoting investment and development.
