Support do not punish

Share

Greetings to you all.
The prevalence of drug and substance abuse has reached alarming and unprecedented levels with
the youths being the most affected. Children as young as 10 years and adults well above 50 years of
age are abusing drugs and substances.
Last week we had a question on how a child can help his brother/sister who is on drugs.
Contributions and feedback I received, revealed that families are hurting.
Mothers are hurting because of their children who are abusing drugs. Fathers are hurting too and so
are sisters brothers and the world.
May the Lord Almighty heal our lives and take away the pain.
The answer is Jesus. Let us not get weary in supporting and praying for our own who are affected by
this problem.
At home let us pray, talk to them and not shun them. At church, let us open up and accommodate
the families and children on drugs rather than preaching about them.
As a child, do not be idle. An Idle mind is the devil workshop. (Proverbs 16 v27)
Do something. Start a garden project. Start a business. Read a book. Explore your talents. Love
yourself. Love life. You are responsible for yourself.
The Gweru memorial library also offers programmes for children to productively use their time.
Game days are every Friday while book club is held every Wednesday.
Join other youths, network, explore and find time to grow not to be idle. Your life is in your hands.
No body owes you anything. You owe it to yourself. Be the best.
In communities talk to Children Care workers, peer educators, friends and relatives you can trust.
Children can also visit the Victim Friendly Unit at the ZRP for more information they need.
Speak to your Sunday school teachers as well. At School also talk to your teachers and friends make
sure you get help because there are various causes of people taking drugs.
As a family work on finding suitable help for your child. If there is need for rehabilitation, look for
relevant information and help your child. Do not be in denial. Do not blame and stress yourself.
Wake up, eat, and take good care of your mental and physical state to ensure that you can fight and
win this battle. Yes you can.
Do not punish your child. Support your child. With God it is possible. Psalms 18 v 6 says ‘In my
distress I called the Lord, I cried to my God for help. From his temple He heard my voice, my cry
came before him, into his ears’. Tell him about your friend, child, brother or sister, father or mother,
he will answer you.
