Support people with disabilities

MIDLANDS based Senator representing People with Disabilities, Annah Shiri, has urged the society to
fully support people with disabilities and not to become a barrier for their success.
Giving a farewell speech at the funeral wake of the late national hero Senator Dr Joshua Malinga in
Bulawayo recently, she ssaid: “I come before you as the Senator representing persons with
disabilities at a time when we gather here to mourn, cherish and celebrate the life of a man
who I can boldly say lived a limitless life and became true testament to the fact that life is filled with
limitless possibilities for as long as you never cease to dream big and win big.
“Disability is not a brave struggle or courage in the face of adversity. Disability is an art; it’s an
ingenious way to live,” she said while quoting Neil Marcus.
Sen. Shiri said disability is a reflection of the beauty and diversity in God’s creation and whatever
people with disabilities do; it is nothing apart from the manifestation of brilliance.
“His life was nothing short of brilliance. In him you saw capability, greatness and you would admire
Dr Joshua Malinga because he never ceased to amaze and do great,” she said.
Senator Shiri described Malinga as a gallant son of the soil who left a legacy of deep compassionate
love, a legacy to live a life of sacrifice just for the betterment of other people.
Through him, she reiterated that the society, including persons with disabilities realised that people
with disabilities are equal members of the society.
The veteran disability rights advocate, said although the late Dr. Malinga was once a mere person
with a disability from the village, he scaled up to become an international figure leading the
Disabled Persons International Organisation.
“Not even his background or physical limitations limited his quest for success and excellence of the
highest order and distinction. As we remember the fallen hero, let this be a reminder to the
society not to be a barrier to the success of people with disabilities. All they need is your support
and like a flower watch them blossom and flourish,” Sen. Shiri added.
