Harare (New Ziana) – The Supreme Court is on Thursday expected to rule on the urgency of an appeal by former cabinet minister Savior Kasukuwere against his disqualification by the High Court to run as a presidential candidate in next month’s general elections.

He was found ineligible to stand as a candidate because he had lived outside the country for more than 18 months consecutively, which disqualifies electoral aspirants for public office.

Kasukuwere has appealed the High Court ruling in the Supreme Court, which has been further petitioned to look at the matter on an urgency basis.

Lawyers for the parties involved said the top court will rule on Thursday whether or not the case should be heard on an urgent basis.

The elections, to choose new presidential, parliamentary and local government representatives for the next five years, will be held on August 23.

Kasukuwere was among 11 presidential candidates that had successfully registered to take part in the election before his candidacy was quashed.
