Harare , (New Ziana) – Tragedy struck the Mashava community in Masvingo Province when two children died and 14 others, including adults, were hospitalized after a suspected case of food poisoning at a traditional beer ceremony held on 27 October 2025.
Police confirmed the distressing incident in a statement released by national police spokesperson, Paul Nyathi, who said investigations were underway to establish the exact cause of the tragedy.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a sad incident where two children died while 14 others, who include seven adults and four children, are critically ill after attending a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava area, Masvingo on 27th October 2025,” he said.
According to preliminary reports, families had gathered for a traditional ritual ceremony where they ate sadza and drank mahewu.
Soon after the meal, several attendees, including children, began complaining of severe stomach pains and started vomiting.
The situation quickly escalated, resulting in the deaths of two minors aged three and seven years.
Four other children and seven adults are now said to be in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital, while three additional victims are receiving treatment at Mashava Clinic.
Police and health authorities have since launched a joint investigation to determine whether the poisoning was caused by contaminated food or drink, or if other factors were involved.
Nyathi expressed condolences to the bereaved families, urging communities to exercise caution when handling and preparing food during public gatherings and traditional ceremonies.
“More details will be released in due course,” he said.
