Traditional leaders have been widely commended for their key role in driving wetland preservation efforts within their communities, thereby securing a sustainable future for Zimbabwe’s vital natural ecosystems.

The recognition came during a well-attended side event held at the Zimbabwe Pavilion, Elephant Hills Resort, led by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife. The event brought together experts, policymakers, and community representatives from across the SADC region—including Zambia, Botswana, and Eswatini—to share experiences and strategies on wetlands conservation.

Speaking on the theme, “Local People and Indigenous Knowledge Systems in Wetland Management,” Mr. Zwela Nyathi, representing the Kasibo wetlands under Chief Hwange, highlighted the tireless efforts by traditional leaders and local communities.

“Chiefs and traditional leaders hold a special mandate towards safeguarding wetlands. They encourage us to spread knowledge within villages about the importance of wetland conservation, including communicating penalties for violations,” said Mr. Nyathi. He added, “Without strong policies to protect our wetlands, they could easily become history. EMA and ZimParks also play a crucial role in disseminating information, ensuring locals know sustainable practices.”

Zimbabwe’s wetlands cover approximately 34.97 percent of the national land area—about 13,659,579 hectares. However, only 17 percent of these wetlands remain pristine, while 55 percent are moderately pristine and 26.7 percent are severely degraded.

Addressing the gathering, EMA spokesperson Steady Kangata emphasised the critical value of wetlands and warned of the threats they continue to face. “Wetlands provide a wide range of goods and services we rely on: medicinal plants, food, clean water, and ecological services like water purification. Globally, however, the quality of wetlands is deteriorating. We need collective action and a deeper appreciation of their value to ensure their wise use and lasting survival,” Kangata said.

Panel discussions also highlighted the social dimension of wetland preservation. The chairperson of the Gutu Wetlands Project noted that wetlands have become a vital source of income for women and youths, empowering them and contributing to the reduction of drug abuse and gender-based violence.

“These wetlands allow us to support our families—paying school fees, earning income, and bringing stability to homes. Women’s groups like Wetlands Queens are helping to foster entrepreneurship among women,” the chairperson explained. “Thanks to ongoing projects, drug and substance abuse among youths has decreased, as the consistent water supply throughout the year allows them to stay engaged and productive.”

The event concluded with renewed calls for greater support and resources for wetland conservation initiatives, with leaders emphasising that empowering communities and integrating indigenous knowledge remain crucial in preserving Zimbabwe’s natural heritage.
