MARONDERA- A 28-year-old Seke man was arrested late last month and is expected to appear in court to face rape charges after reportedly abusing two-year-old infant.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed the incident which has sent tongues waging in the area.

It is reported that on January 30, the toddler’s 34-year-old mother from Maripoko village in Seke left her daughter sleeping in their house and went to their neighbours place to feed some ducks.

The accused, upon realising that the mother was not around sneaked into the room where the toddler was sleeping and took her to a close structure within the yard and raped her once.

“The mother of the victim returned unexpectedly and caught the accused in the act. He tried to run away but villagers gave chase and helped to take him to the police station. Police in Dema attended the scene and arrested the suspect. The victim was referred to Chitungwiza Hospital where she was medically examined and it was confirmed that penetration had been effected.”

Inspector Chazovachiyi said investigations were still in progress.
