Harare,(New Ziana)- Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc has confirmed the death of an employee following an accident at its flagship subsidiary Blanket Mine in Gwanda, Matabeleland South province on Monday, which was related to secondary blasting operations.
Blanket Mine is an operating underground gold mine located in the Gwanda Greenstone Belt of Matabeleland South, owned by Caledonia Mining Corporation plc, with minority interests held by employees and the local community.
In a press release, Caledonia expressed deep regret over the fatality, stating that its immediate priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of all personnel at the mine. The identity of the deceased worker has not yet been released.
“A thorough investigation will be carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. Further details will not be made available until an enquiry has been completed by the relevant authorities,” it said.
The company extended its condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased employee. Blanket Mine, located about 15 kilometres northwest of Gwanda town, is one of the leading gold producers in the country and a key asset in Caledonia’s portfolio.
