Zanu PF’s Zvarevashe Masvingise stamped the party’s dominance in Gutu East by clinching 79,2% of the vote .
Zvarevashe who had been the Local Authority Councillor for Ward 14 , garnered 9 321 votes against his rivals Independent Gift Gonese’s 2 269 (19,3%) votes and NCA’s Zivanai Nzvede’s 173 (1,5%) votes. Total votes cast were 11 957 and of these 194 (1,6%) were rejected leaving 11 764 valid votes.
Masvingise dominated in all the 56 polling stations of the Constituency’s 10 Wards with the highest votes coming from his area of Ward 14 where he received 1 333 votes. Gonese who stood in the 2023 harmonised Elections as Citizen for Coalition Change (CCC) candidate, becoming Independent in this election, failed to make headway with his highest votes coming from Ward 39 which comprises Basera Growth Point and Mugodhi as well as Ward 15 Chin’ai and Muchekayaora polling stations which are the traditional opposition strongholds.
Constituency Elections Officer, Enerst Mukwidza announced the final results at 4am from the Constituency Elections Centre at Alheit High School, declaring Masvingise the winner.
Voting started at 7am closing at 7pm in all the stations. Counting started at 8pm with the 56 station results relayed to the 10 Ward centres for collation. From the Ward centres the results were taken to the Constituency Centre where final collation was done.
Speaking to Rural Communication Services, during and after the elections, some residents said despite their victory, the voter turnout needs to be addressed.
Speaking on condition of anonymity the members said the total number of votes cast is far too low compared to the number of registered voters which could be an indication of apathy , disgruntlement and mobility.
The Constituency has been riddled with infighting within the ruling party due to issues that arose out of the last Harmonised Elections Primary Elections and the recent recalling of incumbent Legislator Benjamin Ganyiwa.
