Victoria Falls, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe’s candidate for the post of Secretary General of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU), Sifundo Moyo, was on Saturday elected unopposed.

Moyo, who was also backed by countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), made history by becoming the first candidate from the southern region to lead the organisation in its four decade history.

He was initially billed to contest against candidates from Egypt, Mali and Morocco at the organisation’s 10th Ordinary Session of the Plenipotentiary Conference held in the resort town of Victoria Falls.

However Egypt’s Sameh Solaiman, was later disqualified for having submitted his bid after cut-off time while Mali’s Abdou Yahiya saw his bid thrown out because his country had, for two consecutive years, failed to pay its membership fees.

Moyo, who was appointed by acclamation, will head the 44 member organisation, whose mission is to spearhead development of the postal sector in Africa and encourage cooperation among stakeholders, for the next four years from 2022

He takes over from Gjibrine Younnous from Cameroon and will be deputised by Uganda’s Jessica Ssengooba.
Moyo described the appointment as a “proud and historic moment for Zimbabwe and SADC.”

Before is recent appointment, Moyo was Zimbabwe’s Postmaster General.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa opened the conference on Friday.

PAPU is headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania.
