MVUMA – A Lalapanzi businessman has been fined US$300 for operating an unregistered college which had enrollment of about 150 learners from Form 1 to 4.
Munyaradzi Marufu (49) was arraigned before the Mvuma Magistrates Court facing a charge of contravening section 42(1)(a) as read with section 42(3) of the Education Act, Chapter 25:04, which prohibits the establishment, operation, or maintenance of unregistered correspondence colleges, and certain advertisements.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Marufu pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to pay a fine of US$300 or in default payment he will serve four months in prison.
“The accused person was charged with unlawfully and illegally establishing, operating, or maintaining an independent college for a reward without being registered or approved by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education,” said the NPAZ.
Agreed facts are that, on an unknown date between January 2023 and October 2024 at Lalapanzi, Marufu established and operated an independent college named “Restoration Academy” without registering it with the Education Ministry.
The college was operating with about 140 to 150 learners and nine teachers who were teaching various subjects. The college had four classes from Form 1 to 4.
