Harare, (New Ziana) – Preparations for the festival to celebrate the legacy of the late comedian Lazarus Boora, also known as Gringo, which will take place in Harare over the weekend, are at an advanced stage, with the organisers confirming that they have lined up several events for the occasion.
The award-winning actor passed away on November 9, 2020 at Westview Hospital in Zimre Park, Ruwa, where he was admitted.
In a statement, organisers of the event said it will include a clean-up campaign and a music gala.
“This two-day event will celebrate Gringo’s contributions to the entertainment industry while also recognizing the impactful careers and legacies of fellow entertainers from his generation, including the late Safirio ‘Mukadota’ Madzikatire, Simon ‘Mutirowafanza’ Shumba, Phillip ‘Paraffin’ Mushangwe, as well as the living luminaries such as Stewart ‘Vambe’ Sakarombe, Chati ‘Godobori’ Butawo, William ‘Gweshegweshe’ Matenga, Ben Sibenge, among many others.
“The Gringo brand would not be as beloved without the creative ingenuity of Enock Chihombori, popularly known as ‘Tobbie Waters’, who originally conceived the Gringo character as a newspaper cartoon. This festival seeks not only to pay tribute to Gringo but also to celebrate the humour and artistry that is a hallmark of Zimbabwe’s rich cultural tapestry,” they said.
The organisers added that the festival will kick off with a community clean-up campaign in the Harare Central Business District (CBD), encouraging community spirit and environmental stewardship among residents.
After the clean-up campaign, the festivities will continue with a music gala at the Harare Gardens which will feature artists such as Sulumani Chimbetu, Chipo Muchegwa, Wilbroad “Willom Tight” Mponda, Shantel Shithole, Vabati vaJehovha, Mai Patai, and Fritz Donzo.
The second day of the Gringo Festival will be reserved for a soccer tournament, which will see eight amateur teams from Harare competing at the Prince Edward Soccer Grounds.
“We invite all Zimbabweans and fans of Gringo’s legacy to join us in honouring his memory and celebrating the vibrant talent within our nation. Together, let us pay tribute to the artists who have brought laughter and joy to our lives,” the organisers said.
