MUTARE-A Rusape based 28-year-old national heavyweight boxing champion
Anesu Motsi has made a passionate plea to the business community in the
province to financially assist him and prevent his boxing skills from sinking into
oblivion.
Motsi who doubles as a supermarket help in Rusape said his growth in the sport
had largely been hampered by the lack of adequate financial resources to contest
in international competitions.
The super heavy weight boxer weighing 118 kg is the current national heavy
weight champion with nine wins- five of them via knock outs and one loss.
In an interview with Pungwe Sport, Motsi, also known as ‘The Guy
Unstoppable’ said he fears no one and is ready to challenge any boxer in the
world provided he has the resources to continue pursuing his love for the sport.
“I started boxing in 2009. I fought in Russia, South Africa, Ghana, Namibia,
and Egypt. I currently have 28 career gold medals. The major challenge as a
sport and as a country right now is the lack of sponsorship. I am very committed
to pursuing my career in boxing given I find sponsorship to further train and
compete. I believe in my capacity to challenge any title in the world and bring
the back the coveted prize home,” he said.
He bemoaned the lack of sponsorship in boxing as a sport adding that most
people are more than willing to sponsor soccer unlike boxing.
His manager Robson Maganga said they had made a passionate appeal to
business community in the province because Motsi was now at a stage of his
career ready to represent the country at global level.
We need to make our boxer well presentable so that he takes his boxing title to
another stage. We have had Mungwaru Inc based in UK who pledged to assist
the boxer with boxing clothing and it is our appeal that those in business should
also extend a helping hand to this young boxer while he is still in his prime
time,” said Maganga.
Zimbabwe last took part in the Africa Boxing Confederation tournament in
1994 in South Africa. The team won a bronze medal in the light-middleweight.
